Wolverine Classic Set for Late May at Louisville?s PJCS

RADCLIFF, KY. (PRWEB) May 8, 2006

One of the most attended events in all of men?s semi-pro football is coming to the Derby City later this month.

The Hardin County Wolverines, based in the Radcliff-Elizabethtown-Fort Knox area, will host their first Wolverine Classic: Touchdowns Touching Lives on May 27 at the eighth-year old Papa John?s Cardinal Stadium on the University of Louisville campus.

The Wolverines, fourth-year members of the Ohio Valley Football League, will face one of its four OVFL AFC West division rivals, the second-year Western Kentucky Punishers, at 4 p.m. (EST).

The Wolverines are recognized as one of the most talented teams in semi-pro football, amassing a 33-9-1 (.767 winning percentage) in their previous three seasons.

Not only will the game serve as both teams? season opener in the 20-team, six-state OVFL (http://www.OVFLFootball.org), but the event will also allow the teams to help the community. Proceeds will benefit Metro United Way and Par for the Cure, a breast cancer research foundation.

Serving the community is old hat for the Wolverines, who have done work with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Special Olympics? polar bear plunge, Toys for Tots, the Make A Wish Foundation and Community Action in the past.

Kentucky?s governor, Ernie Fletcher, has been invited to attend the event, as have several Jefferson County, Henderson County and Hardin County dignitaries. A nationally known rap group – with roots to My Old Kentucky Home – is currently in negotiations to headline a postgame concert with several bands from the Louisville area.

Tickets are $ 10 for all seats (including lower level) and are available at all area Kroger locations as well as ticketmaster.com.

As of May 5, almost 3,000 tickets had been sold for the event, which would rank it as one of the most attended semi-pro football events in the country!

According to Semi-Pro Football Headquarters (http://www.semiprofootball.org), ?There are over six-hundred teams in the United States that refer to themselves as semi-pro, minor league, senior amateur, or adult amateur in over 50 different leagues. These players usually have played high school or college ball, and they want to continue competing after their eligibility has been exhausted.?
